CHARACTER FORMATION: Discipline, Perseverance, Teamwork, Leadership, and Respect

At Sparhawk, the ultimate goal of our Athletics programming is the formation of character—developing qualities such as discipline, perseverance, teamwork, leadership, and respect. These are values students carry with them from the field and the court into the classroom, their relationships, and their future endeavors. While we encourage healthy competition and strive for excellence in performance across all our sports teams, winning is not our sole measure of success. Equal emphasis is placed on personal growth, sportsmanship, and the development of well-rounded individuals who understand the importance of integrity, toughness, effort, and responsibility both in athletics and in life.

To foster this holistic formation, the majority of our coaches also serve as teachers at Sparhawk. By interacting with our students both in the classroom and on the field, our teachers have unique insight into how to best serve each individual boy and often collaborate with each other to aid in the boy’s formation. This teacher-coach model is seen as a core pillar of our Athletics program philosophy.

Physical Education

At Sparhawk, we believe that education happens both within and beyond the classroom and that physical and spiritual formation are as important as intellectual formation. This vision can be seen in our Physical Education program. Each grade has a PE period at least three days of the week. Daily recess and physical education are necessary breaks in the academic routine and are also necessary for development of the virtues taught through sports.

The PE curriculum has a threefold mission: to provide each boy with physical formation that will promote his health and capabilities throughout his life, to introduce each boy to various sports in order to foster a love for the sport and equip him with the skills necessary to participate in it competently, and, most importantly, to provide a fun and engaging environment that is ripe for character development and virtue formation.

Through Sparhawk’s PE curriculum, the boys play games that promote coordination, speed, endurance, and strength. They are introduced to and compete in several sports while learning the technical skills necessary to participate in each sport skillfully. Learning how to dribble, throw, shoot, kick, take down, and catch help cultivate the boys’ capabilities. In addition to games and sports, the boys also learn how to build a fitness routine that will lay the foundation for not only a healthy body but also a physical fitness level necessary to improve their overall capacity to participate in competitive sports.

Overall, the curriculum encourages students to explore their capabilities through engaging group activities that challenge students in body and mind. With a diverse range of exercises and games, the program aims to build physical and mental prowess. This holistic approach to physical education aligns with our commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals ready to lead healthy, active lives.

Team Sports

Sparhawk offers a total of six traditional team sports throughout the academic year—two per season. In the fall, boys may participate in soccer or cross-country. In the winter, boys may participate in basketball or wrestling. In the spring, boys may participate in baseball or rugby. Of these six sports, our student-athletes compete interscholastically in five: cross-country, soccer, basketball, wrestling, and baseball.

Sparhawk Academy is not currently a member of any particular league or conference. Our Athletics Department works closely with surrounding Catholic, private, and public schools to arrange competition that is mutually beneficial and challenging to our teams. As Sparhawk’s high school grows, we will seek league membership that fits our culture and competitive level of play.

Most of our competitive sports are catered toward our older students, as they are now developing the skills necessary to compete against other schools. With this being said, we do offer a few sports to our younger students in order to introduce them to the world of athletics with a healthy emphasis on character, teamwork, and joy in effort. Athletics are structured to support holistic development rather than early specialization or over-competition. As students grow, we pursue excellence with discipline and purpose, always keeping athletics in its proper place: a powerful means of cultivating virtue, resilience, and community while striving to compete well.

Adventure Sports

Sparhawk’s Education Through Adventure model plays an integral role in shaping our Athletics program. In addition to our traditional sport offerings, one adventure sport is also offered per season: Outdoorsmen club in the fall, skiing in the winter, and rock climbing in the spring. Through these sports, boys are encouraged to step beyond their comfort zones and engage in thoughtfully designed challenges that promote courage, self-mastery, and confidence. We believe that taking age-appropriate risks catalyzes a growth in maturity—adventure sports provide the perfect medium to do so.

Although we greatly value our team sports and the role they play in fostering virtue and love of sport, we also want to encourage our students to “take off the helmet” for a season and engage in noncompetitive physical activities that they can grow in and take with them for the rest of their lives. We want to empower our boys to head to a climbing gym or crag with their friends and cheer each other up the route; we want our boys to spend a weekend with their friends or families backpacking the White Mountains; we want our boys hitting the slopes of one of our epic New England ski mountains this winter and in the many winters of their lives to come.

Lastly, participation in outdoor athletics cultivates a deeper respect for and appreciation of the natural world. Sparhawk aims not only to introduce boys to the thrill and fun of adventure sports but also to inspire a lifelong pursuit of outdoor activity, adventure, and personal growth. We desire to help raise contemplative young men who can appreciate looking up into a beautiful, starstrung night sky while camping or taking in a sweeping mountainscape after ascending miles of steep root- and rock-littered trail. Getting out into nature through our Adventure Sports program facilitates these encounters with beauty.
