Summer Programs 2019

We are happy to announce that registration is open for the 2019 summer programs at Sparhawk Academy.

We offer the programs with the Sparhawk characteristics of personal attention, good humor, and a spirit of adventure—whether it is practicing soccer, programming robots, or launching into one of the activities in the Bugs, Birds, & Botany program. And, of course, these characteristics are brought to life by our dedicated and enthusiastic faculty.

  • The Joy of Sports (June 17 – 21 for boys entering grades 3 – 6).

  • LEGO Robotics (July 1 – 5 for boys entering grades 5 – 9).

Sebago Leadership Camp

If you are interested in programs at Sparhawk, you might also be interested in the fun and character-building experience of Sebago Leadership Camp. The Joy of Sports (boys entering grades 3 – 6)

This program provides boys with a love of sports the opportunity to compete in a wide variety of sport offerings including soccer, basketball, baseball, flag football, and Ultimate Frisbee in an environment where hard work and teamwork are emphasized and valued.  Each day will include a focus on a specific virtue connected to the life of an athlete.  Your boy will also be coached throughout the week in the various aspects of the different sports, helping him to gain a better understanding of the sports and to hone the skills needed to compete well in each.

Dates: June 17 – 21

Hours: 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Ages: Boys entering grades 3 – 6

Notes: Boys should come dressed to be outdoors, prepared for whatever the weather and environment might bring.  Boys should bring their own lunch, a water bottle, cleats, sneakers, and a baseball glove.

Bugs, Birds, & Botany (boys entering grades 2 – 6)

Help your son see the world in color with a week of natural history at Sparhawk Academy.  In one week, we will introduce your son to an assortment of local birds, trees, and bugs that he might otherwise pass by blindly.  Each day, we will walk the expansive grounds of Sparhawk, giving time for quiet observation and journaling.  Your son will tend chickens and gardens, perhaps enjoying some of the fruits of his labor.  He will start small collections of plants and bugs, learning to recognize the beautiful reality around him by name.  In this one week of discovery, we hope to whet your son’s appetite for wonder.

LEGO Robotics (boys entering grades 5 – 9)

Students will use the LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Set and software to explore the fascinating world of robotics. Students will learn the basics of good robot design and be able to practice building various accessories for the robot. Students will then use software that allows for intuitive drag-and-drop programming of the robot. Teamwork and creativity will be required as the boys compete in various robot challenges.

Dates: July 1 – 5

Hours: 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Ages: Boys entering grades 5 – 9

Notes: Students may be asked to bring laptops or iPads to use as programming devices. The LEGO Robotics equipment will be provided. 

Woodworking (boys entering grades 5 – 8)

Give your son the chance to work with his hands and bring home something tangible, a product of his own making that inspires a healthy confidence.  Your son will learn the importance of focus and attention to detail as he picks up some basic skills in woodworking, using hammers, saws, and simple power tools.

Math Boot Camp (boys entering grades 5 – 9)

Based on an initial assessment test, students will have the opportunity to hone their math skills through a combination of group lecture and individual tutoring. The program will involve working on LOTS of math problems. A daily math project will also help students see the connection between math and its usefulness in the real world. This program is primarily targeted towards students who struggled with Saxon Math this year. It will help build the foundations for tackling next year’s math challenges.

Dates: July 22 – 26

Ages: Boys entering grades 5 – 9

Summer Adventures (boys entering grades 5 – 8)

All boys need adventure in their life. This program is designed to foster a love of life and adventure outside of the trappings of video games and technology. Our extensive property allows us to offer a generous sampling of activities and lessons that familiarizes participants with games, hobbies, and skills that every boy should know and love. With its conglomerate of themes, the program is directed with a specific vision towards the healthy, all-around growth of boys’ body and mind, through healthy, active leisure. Sample activities may include water-balloons, marshmallow guns, tending chickens, gardening, sports, short stories, whittling, historic battles, paper airplanes, fire-building, slingshots, creeking, and more!

Dates: July 22 – 26
